Custom Templates: The Process
Horizontal Red Rule

In the fifteen years since Field Template came into being, we've been asked to design, consult, and produce custom templates for our clients.  In some cases folks have provided us with computerized documents showing the symbols they'd like to see cut into plastic.  Other times we've been given a sketch on a cocktail napkin.  Regardless of the input, we pride ourselves on a 100% satisfaction rate for the final product delivered to the client.  Honest.  We know what we're doing.

When we're initially contacted by clients interested in creating a custom template they're inevitably curious about the final cost of the project.  Usually, the cost of producing a custom template is based upon six factors:

  • Outside dimension and shape - big plastic = more expensive template.

  • Thickness and color - We produce all of our own templates on the industry standard size of .030" thickness.  The base price includes basic colors such as:  green, blue, orange, and clear.

  • Amount of stamped color or special colors - black, red, and blue are typical.  More than one color increases cost, as well as multiple color choices.

  • Number and complexity of shapes (if you will, holes) cut into the plastic - more holes = more cuts = more time.

  • How many - more templates = lower cost per unit.

  • Timeframe - rush orders are welcome but costly.

We can help you with template design consultation.  After years of experience, we know when symbols may be too close to each other and can cause deflection when tracing.  We understand the intuitive interaction that should exist between graphics stamped into the plastic and their related holes underneath.  And since we we think of templates as working tools, we can see where too little plastic could lead to failure points.
