VectorWorks® and Spotlight version 11 has been released for some time now. VW11 users have asked:

”I just upgraded to VectorWorks® 11 and it doesn’t want to play with SoftSymbols 10. None of my Favorites will open or show me their Resources. I tried dragging a SoftSymbols Object Library document onto the VectorWorks® 11 icon and that didn’t work. Is there a chance that it’s supposed to and I’m doing something wrong? If not, is there an SoftSymbols update in the future that will make things right again?”

Softsymbols™ Object Libraries (and for that matter, any VectorWorks® version 9 or 10 document) can easily be upgraded to VectorWorks® version 11. But they have to be converted from WITHIN the VectorWorks® 11 application. In sequence:

1. Open the VW11 application. (Resulting in an ”Untitled” VW11 document.)

2. Scroll down to ”Open...” in the File menu.

3. Navigate through the directories and select the SoftSymbols™ Object Library you wish to upgrade to a VW11 document.

4. Once the document has been selected, you’ll be presented with a ”updating and opening in new window” alert box.

5. Click ”OK” and the document will open. The name of the document will have the suffix ”v11.mcd” Save the document to it’s original name, or a different name (if you wish to retain a VW10 and VW11 version of the same document.)

That’s all there is to it.

It’s worth noting that Nemetschek has improved the code for document consolidation. Tests have shown that version 9 or 10 documents, once upgraded to version 11, are significantly smaller file sizes.

Now, to answer the second part of the question; yes, there is a SoftSymbols™ update coming down the pike. The ”staff” worked on it for some time last summer, but then got distracted by that ”work” thing. The rest of the fall is already spoken for, so the current plan is to get SoftSymbols™ Version 2 ready for USITT Toronto.

January 2004

A bug report was submitted regarding SoftSymbols™ for the Mac v9. Running Mac VW version 9.5.3 and Mac OS 10.2.8, a user reported that, when a new drawing was the active document, resources contained in an unopened FT Object Library document could not be viewed in the version 9 Object Browser.

SoftSymbols™ Tech Support could not duplicate this symtom, so a file and help request was emailed to Nemetschek Tech Support.

Nemetschek Tech Support responded: "What I had to do was just draw something (like a line) and then save the file. Once I did this, it (the symbols) started showing up in the Object Browser even without the file open."

This email implies that (at least with this combination of Mac OS and VW), to view the resources contained in an unopened Mac VW version 9 FT Object Library document:

• Open the FT Object Library document
• Make a single alteration to the drawing (like draw a new line)
• Save the document (presumably with the same name).

After closing, the resources contained in this FT Object Library document can then be viewed in the Object Browser without the document being open.

Nemetschek has advised that Mac OS 10.3 will not support VW 9.5.3, will only support VW 10 and above.
